Remember, the Ready for Rigor framework centers building powerful learners as the goal of culturally responsive teaching. We resist reducing culturally responsive teaching to superficial, performative activities like multicultural
festivals that resemble Disney’s It’s A Small ride. And we don’t confuse culturally responsive teaching with simply adding social justice topics to the curriculum or discussions of racism or other “-isms”. While these are important, they don’t build a student’s brain power to take on deeper learning.
In a word, they don’t get students ready for rigor.
Instead, we invest in the core instructional practices, structures, and routines that create the conditions for students to thrive.
